Tomorrow, Sunday, November 11, Brian and Virginia Henry will be at the club between 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm to manage sales from the Elmira pro shop while Junior curling is underway. Junior curlers (or their parents) can take a look at brooms, heads, and shoes along with other curling accessories. Tweet

A visit to Asham’s

Posted by on July 4, 2012 at 5:23 pm

Our annual summer holiday on the Prairies gave us another opportunity to visit the main Asham’s store at 700 McPhillips Street in Winnipeg’s North End. Asham’s huge retail outlet is a mecca for both competitive and recreational curlers, where autographed portraits of well-known teams adorn the walls and stairways in the main retail space, and […]

Mitt samples available at Open House next week

Posted by on September 27, 2011 at 8:21 am

Thanks to Mike Furey and his staff at Adventure Guide, we’ll have samples of children’s mitts suitable for curling on display at next week’s Open House at Elmira on October 5th and 6th, and again at the Junior Curling open houses on October 16th and 23rd. For curling, mitts are much preferable to gloves. More […]

Ice Halo now available for use at Elmira

Posted by on August 3, 2011 at 9:03 pm

In time for the start of the 2011-2012 curling season, Little Rock and Bantam curlers who are nervous about being on the ice will have the opportunity to use an Ice Halo at the Elmira and District Curling Club. I was first introduced to the Ice Halo this past April at a clinic at the […]

New bowling pins for Little Rockers

Posted by on June 20, 2011 at 5:33 am

I don’t recall precisely where I first saw a reference to using bowling pins on the ice with young Little Rock curlers – but it probably came from one of the several resources for Little Rock curling that comes from the Canadian Curling Association. But I immediately grasped the idea’s appeal – bowling is a […]

Curling Strategy Tool on iPhone

Posted by on May 27, 2011 at 11:03 pm

I have often used a strategy board to discuss game situations with the athletes I coach. A strategy board is a really useful tool and I make sure I have one at each practice and every game. But one frustration that I have is being able to document situations during a game and be able […]

Curling shoes: choosing a slider

Posted by on May 22, 2011 at 9:21 pm

A curler has two primary pieces of equipment: a brush, and a pair of curling shoes. In golf, multi-million advertising dollars are spent each year by golf shoe manufacturers such as Footjoy (recently sold to interests in South Korea) to convince golfers that one golf shoe matters over another. I would argue that in curling, […]

The Junior hack

Posted by on April 2, 2011 at 5:16 pm

This afternoon I helped Jason Rice and John Tartt run a Club Coach refresher course at the Guelph Curling Club. During the course I got some interest in the Junior program at Elmira and, in particular, the Junior hack we use for 7- and 8-year-olds. I realized that I didn’t have any photographs of the […]

Cleaning your brush

Posted by on March 8, 2011 at 8:13 am

Over the weeks you spend curling, your synthetic brush head accumulates a lot of dirt, lint and other debris that eventually gets difficult to remove with the scrub brushes at the end of each sheet. If you find your brush head looks particularly dirty, you’ll need to clean it with detergent and water. Here’s how. […]

Handles for new Lite Rock stones have arrived!

Posted by on February 21, 2011 at 2:46 pm

Thanks to the generous contributions from Elmira and District Curling Club members, and to John Moseley-Williams of McDonald’s Restaurants, our new engraved Lite Rock stone handles arrived recently from Canada Curling Stone. Each stone now features a name selected by a donor, and on the opposite side has the McDonald’s Restaurant logo. In my own […]
