One of the advantages of being a member of the Coaches Association of Canada is that I receive all sorts of tips and links to articles that pertain to a wide variety of topics in coaching, not (simply) those related to the sport of curling.
This past week one of those articles came to my attention and I thought I would repost it here. The article is entitled Parents Need to Eat to Compete too! and it is part of an ongoing series, Nutrition Tips for Coaches from Dietitians, on sport nutrition. Here is the abstract of Parents Need to Eat to Compete too:
The Sport Nutrition program has been developed to help keep athletes as healthy as possible and to provide advice to benefit optimal performance, but what about those who support them? As a parent supporting a young athlete, you have an important job too — making healthy food choices while acting as a positive role model for your rising star! From your everyday meals to meals eaten while travelling to tournaments, meets and games, it’s important to consider not only what your child will eat but what you will eat. Here are some tips to help guide your choices.
While this article is targeted towards parents, much of the content can be helpful when planning meals for your kids the day of a bonspiel. Staying away from sugar and excessive carbohydrates is a good idea, because of the crash it invariably brings on for the second game in the afternoon.
