The 2013-2014 junior curling season comes to a close

Another junior curling season at the Elmira and District Curling Club is quickly coming to an end.

This season we celebrated a number of significant accomplishments:

  • solid performances by our Little Rock teams in various bonspiels, including a win by Olivia Ronson and her rink in the Elmira Junior Bonspiel;
  • Team Erica Poluck qualifying for OCA bantam girls’ regionals out of Mount Forest (Zone 14);
  • Three teams entered in bantam boys and girls competitions: Team Erica Poluck, Team Anika Molenaar, and Team Andrew Paulley;
  • Team Andrew Paulley finishing as runner-up to Team Walker of the Parry Sound Curling Club in the boys’ draw in our first annual OJCT cash spiel in November;
  • Three bantam mixed teams (an Elmira club record) entered in OCA Zone 12 bantam mixed: Team Emma McKenzie, Team Natalie Bean, and Team Alison Poluck.

and we look forward to celebrating top-tier performances next season!

My thanks to all of those who have helped make the program such a success this year: our coaches (Marc Bernard and Dirk Molenaar) and assistants (Reg Domaratzki, Melody Martin, Andrew Paulley and Sam Domaratzki); our ice technician, Rob Shaw; and to Deb Wells, Dave Wells, Alison Olmsted and Sara Ronson for looking after hot chocolate for the Little Rockers each Sunday afternoon. Your involvement and your time are greatly appreciated.

Our final Little Rock practice was held this past Sunday; our final bantam practice will be held this Sunday, March 30 at 3:00pm. Our bantam athletes will be joined on the ice by two teams of Little Rockers who will get one additional opportunity to throw granite stones before the K-W Granite’s Monkey bonspiel on Saturday, April 12.

Our final event of the year will be our Junior closing potluck, which will be held following the conclusion of the Monkey Bonspiel on Saturday, April 12. Doors at the club will be open at 4:30pm where a variety of games will be available to play, followed at 5:30pm by a potluck dinner. Complimentary (non-alcoholic) refreshments will be served. Dinner will be followed by our annual awards presentation where we will celebrate individual curlers in four separate categories: Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Player, Most Sportsmanlike Player, and Most Valuable Player for each age group.
