2018 Elmira U18 OJCT Bonspiel Summary
On February 2-4 Elmira hosted our fifth annual U18 OJCT cash spiel with 16 rinks participating from across southern Ontario to compete for OJCT tour points and for $2600 in prize money available to qualifying teams. On the womens’ side, in Pool A cumulative draw-to-the-button scores were not required as teams Poluck from Galt Country and Ensing from Elora finished the round robin with matching 2-1 records, but with Erin Ensing earning first place honours via a win over Alison Poluck in draw 3. Similarly, in Pool B, Team Veronica Bernard of Elmira were undefeated at 3-0, followed by Hannah Don from Oshawa at 2-1, and both of these teams qualified for playoffs without the need for tie-breakers. Skip Matthew Prenevost made some outstanding shots during the tournament, including a
Junior update – December 2017
Our Junior Curling season is well underway at Elmira, with thirteen Little Rockers and twenty U15, U18 and U19 athletes. Our next practice will be Sunday, January 7 after the Christmas break. Our Little Rockers have been practicing hard since the end of October. On Saturday, December 16, Mackenna Riel, Emma and Lauren Penston, and Hannah Wilk participated in their first bonspiel of the season in Milton and earned a third-place finish. Congratulations girls! We have a number of Little Rock events coming up after the New Year, with exhibition games planned with Little Rockers from the Ayr Curling Club and Acton Curling Clubs, and the Westmount Rob Shepherd bonspiel in early March. For the older athletes, our first Interclub of the season was held at the Kitchener-Waterloo Granite Club on November 25, and three more Interclub days are planned this season with our next Interclub event scheduled for Saturday, January 13 in Elora. Two long-time Elmira Juniors, and their

After a late cancellation, the teams and pools for the mens’ and women’ draws have been finalized for the 5th annual 2018 Elmira OJCT U18 cash spiel that takes place at the Elmira and District Curling Club the weekend of February 2-4, 2018. We anticipate a total prize pool in the neighbourhood of $2200.00. There will be a mandatory coach and player meeting 15 minutes prior to the start of your first game in the upstairs lounge at the curling club. The meeting will go over rules, expectations and any questions you may have about the bonspiel. A detailed information package will be sent out to all teams in early January. Parents and spectators are welcome to the club! We will offer full bar and beverage service on the Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday evening draws. We regret, however, that Elmira is not currently wheelchair-accessible. This bonspiel is an OJCT sanctioned event and game outcomes will be reported to
Entries now accepted for U15 coachable bonspiel and clinic
This year, the annual Elmira Junior Bonspiel will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2017. As we did last year, this will be a coachable U15 bonspiel that will feature a single draw of two games. Between the games, both the players and coaches will be served lunch followed by a 2-hour clinic with certified mentor coaches covering topics such as brushing and setup, and in addition will feature two off-ice sessions on nutrition and mental skills training. Games will be scored using a new U15 development system under review by the Ontario Curling Council, and coaches will be permitted within the arena during games. There will be no prizes at this event. Additional information and detailed descriptions of the game format will be provided to registered teams once the draw is complete. Teams must be accompanied by a coach, as the clinic is as much for the coaches as it is for the players. Coaches should come prepared to

In addition to weekly practices and occasional competitive events, U15/U18 players are welcome to participate in U18 Interclub, a loose consortium of junior programs at various curling clubs designed to provide development opportunities to younger, more inexperienced players. U18 Interclub includes Acton, Elmira, Elora, Palmerston, Orangeville, Fergus, KW Granite, Westmount, and Alliston curling clubs. At Elmira we plan to host two youth events: our annual OJCT U18 cash bonspiel on February 2-4, and a coachable U15 bonspiel on Saturday, October 28. The men’s draw of our OJCT bonspiel has been full since mid-June and the women’s draw has only one spot remaining. As our U18 cash spiel is one of the last events prior to U18 qualifiers, it remains a very popular
