Draw finalized for 2018 Elmira OJCT cash spiel

After a late cancellation, the teams and pools for the mens’ and women’ draws have been finalized for the 5th annual 2018 Elmira OJCT U18 cash spiel that takes place at the Elmira and District Curling Club the weekend of February 2-4, 2018. We anticipate a total prize pool in the neighbourhood of $2200.00. There will be a mandatory coach and player meeting 15 minutes prior to the start of your first game in the upstairs lounge at the curling club. The meeting will go over rules, expectations and any questions you may have about the bonspiel. A detailed information package will be sent out to all teams in early January. Parents and spectators are welcome to the club! We will offer full bar and beverage service on the Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday evening draws. We regret, however, that Elmira is not currently wheelchair-accessible. This bonspiel is an OJCT sanctioned event and game outcomes will be reported to

Entries now accepted for U15 coachable bonspiel and clinic

This year, the annual Elmira Junior Bonspiel will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2017. As we did last year, this will be a coachable U15 bonspiel that will feature a single draw of two games. Between the games, both the players and coaches will be served lunch followed by a 2-hour clinic with certified mentor coaches covering topics such as brushing and setup, and in addition will feature two off-ice sessions on nutrition and mental skills training. Games will be scored using a new U15 development system under review by the Ontario Curling Council, and coaches will be permitted within the arena during games. There will be no prizes at this event. Additional information and detailed descriptions of the game format will be provided to registered teams once the draw is complete. Teams must be accompanied by a coach, as the clinic is as much for the coaches as it is for the players. Coaches should come prepared to

Junior curling at Elmira begins Sunday, October 22

Junior curling resumes at Elmira on Sunday, 22 October 2017. On October 22 both Little Rock and U15/U18/U21 groups return to the ice as usual over the two sessions, 1:30pm for Little Rock and 3:00 pm for U15/U18/U21. In addition to weekly practices and occasional competitive events, U15/U18 players are welcome to participate in U18 Interclub, a loose consortium of junior programs at various curling clubs designed to provide development opportunities to younger, more inexperienced players. U18 Interclub includes Acton, Elmira, Elora, Palmerston, Orangeville, Fergus, KW Granite, Westmount, and Alliston curling clubs. At Elmira we plan to host two youth events: our annual OJCT U18 cash bonspiel on February 2-4, and a coachable U15 bonspiel on Saturday, October 28. The men’s draw of our OJCT bonspiel has been full since mid-June and the women’s draw has only one spot remaining. As our U18 cash spiel is one of the last events prior to U18 qualifiers, it remains a very popular

Elmira Junior U15 bonspiel summary

On Saturday, February 4, Elmira hosted our annual Elmira Junior Bonspiel. This year, for the first time, we transformed the bonspiel into a U15 event to provide an opportunity for younger teams to get in some games, and some instruction, before the inaugural OCA U15 qualifiers take place February 11-12. In addition to two games, these young athletes and their coaches participated in a 2.5 hour clinic, where they were introduced to nutrition, brushing technique, strategy, and delivery setup fundamentals. Assisting with the instruction were Marc Bernard, coach of the varsity women at Wilfrid Laurier; Byron Scott, head coach at the University of Guelph; Amy Ballantyne, a nutrition consultant from Waterloo; Alison Poluck, who throws second stones for Elmira-based Team Emma McKenzie; and Jason Rice, a Learning Facilitator with the OCA and the former women’s coach at both Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier. Congratulations to winners Team Prenevost from Oakville, with runners-up Team Fraser and third place finishers Team Henry from
